The cool, refreshing night air and the moonlight made travel easy in the forest near the Northern Gate that led to the Northern Alps. Crickets could be heard occasionally but other than that, the forest was silent.

A young Kishu-Akita mix slowly padded along the dirty path near the edge of the tree line, tongue lolling out as he panted softly. His bright brown eyes gleamed in the dark as he looked around him, hoping to find a good spot to rest. He had been running for three days straight now from Oshu to here and was quite tired. The only other thoughts he had other than rest were finding food and meeting another dog who knew the area.

''Ah, why didn't I ask before I left home?''

The night air seemed to become cooler as he spoke and the dog slightly tensed when a breeze blew by that made a chill go up his spine. He glanced at the crescent moon overhead and began to look more earnestly for a place to sleep. The moon didn't give much light, but his young eyes were able to see ahead a good yard or so.

About an hour passed before he felt he could explode in frustration. Just as he was about to lie down under a tree, he saw a cave ahead near a small stream. With a bark, the once again high-spirited youth ran towards the cave, eagerly anticipating the feeling of lying down and resting for as long as he needed to. Remembering his essential survival skills, he checked the cave entrance and surrounding area for scents of animals first before going inside to rest.

'Now this is more like it,'  the young male thought as he lay down on the cool floor of the cave that may have been a den previously. A few old bones were scattered about in the far back of the cave. Thinking nothing of it, the dog curled up and fell promptly asleep.

This feathered fellow was no dog; but his curiosity would certainly do him in. A few birds meandered their way in the darkness, but Shou caught sight of the fellow below; even in this faint light this dog stood out. Shou believed the humans called them Kishus, but it looked like nothing more than a white dog to him. Perching himself on a branch, he tilted his head and watched the dog run aimlessly. He found it amusing; dogs, who lacked the power of flight, got lost so easily. He, meanwhile, could fly and survey the land, and in the end he learned much more than any dog traveling by paw. The crow though about speaking to this poor soul, after all, maybe he was in need of help; however what was the fun to be had there? The dog should have been more careful, shouldn't have run so fast, in the end this dog deserved to be mocked. No bird made this mistake, even when they traveled south.

As the dog showed signs of agitation, Shou took off, gently flapping his wings. As he decended and ascended on the breeze, the bird let out a few ominous caws, activating other caws around him. It was mainly to locate others of his kind, but Shou knew how a caw was often heard as a reminder that all hope was lost. He took his time getting lost in the branches of another tree, his eyes narrowed and watching the dog work himself to the point of exhaustion, even barking when there was little to even bark at. His head rotated with laughter as it watched this dog, he was utterly lost. He could watch this Kishu, if he was right in his memory, run around all he wanted. In fact, the crow thought about making his night by being entertained by this dog, but he was not to get his wish. Not all dogs were as silly or as stupid as the city dwelling 'tiger' he had met, and when he moon showed its smile Shou was certain that no gunslinging falcons were out. He was a shadow, and watched intensely as the door discovered a cave. Shou had seen many other caves dotting the forest, but this dog evidently had not. Wanting to get a closer look, Shou took off and circled above the cave. It was apparent he would have to do something he dreaded if he wanted to toy with this dog; land. He neared the ground cautiously, and then excitedly when he saw that the dog had fallen asleep. Now was his chance!

Hopping and carefully stepping above and around the bones, Shou approached the Kishu and went to pull his tail; it was a sure fire way to annoy and startled others. He fluttered a bit away from the dog the moment he did his, and with as an ominous voice as he could muster - as the whole scene was rather laughable - "Hora!" his voice echoed in the cave, his command of Japanese slang was always present; he simply said 'Hey', "what right do you have to rest here!?" The crow stood with his beak open, his wings outstretched and his feathers puffed. The moment the dog turned to snap, he would be in the air, laughing at a dog who fell for such a silly ruse! A crow, owning a cave? A crow, leaving behind bones? A crow was a nomad, a crow was not troubled by the past. Especially Shou, who learned from his mistakes - occasionally - but always returned to test his luck just once more.

A faint tugging was felt on his tail, but Kin paid no mind; his sleep was more important to him. What if it's an enemy however? The mere thought made him snap open his eyes, fully awake again. He was starting to lift his head when a voice seemingly echoed all around him.

'Hora! What right do you have to rest here!?'

By the last of the sentence, the young dog was up and ready to attack but he didn't growl and he was very thankful he didn't do so. No one was to be seen at the front of the cave, nor behind him. Refusing to take any chances, he cautiously slunk outside and looked around the cave's entrance. Finding nothing, he tiredly sighed and made his way back inside, unaware of a pair of shiny eyes watching him from a distance. Considering his tired state, he wouldn't be able to do much if he was aware of the fact.

'Who was that I wonder?'

With another sigh, he plopped down farther inside the cave, ignoring the bone his hind legs touched as he lay down. For an annoying amount of time, he couldn't shut his eyes due to the fact that he felt that someone was watching him. Attempting to calm himself down, he curled up and let out another sigh. He could worry about it tomorrow, when he was well rested.

The crow watched the lazy dog; how tired could the Kishu be? Shou tilted his head, and easily took his place again beside the dog. He didn't really care what or who this dog was; he was covered in scars - probably due to his lack of navigation skills - and seemed about as blind as a bat. This meant, of course, that Shou found him hilarious. After contemplating for some time what to do, Shou this time trekked to Kogane Ruy's ears. Dogs and many mammals looked so silly with those flaps sticking out of their ears. The crow wondered if those were the remains of mammals' wings, but quickly dismissed this. Mammals weren't meant to fly! They were not graced with the gift of wings. As for bats? Shou hardly thought of them as mammals; he wasn't a human scientist, he simply knew bats to be featherless, odd birds who always slept oddly and only came out at night. The only good thing about them was that they kept to themselves, which meant they hardly ever were bothered by Shou. The same could not be said for dogs, however, especially a tired and lost one like this Kishu.

Shou tugged on Kogane's ear, hard, in an effort to wake him up. "Oi, Oi!" He cawed, "are you blind or just an imbecile?" His speech done, Shoul stood there waiting, quite confident that this dog wasn't going to be as moody as the dog he had met in the city, and not as violent as the falcon he had met near the river. This dog was exactly what most dogs were; lazy furry bums whom Shou found amusing. How could he not? This dog hadn't even seen him, and what fun was trying to talk to a dog who was too busy being exhausted? Shou even wondered if he'd be able to to take this fellow on in a fight; not that he would, Shou wasn't stupid - but this dog seemed like the type that wouldn't pose much of a threat, unlike the Falcon or 'Rei-Rei', as he would remember her as.

''Oi,oi! Are you blind or just an imbecile?''

Kin felt a pang of annoyance as he heard the now familiar voice call out again. He was desperate for sleep and this other animal was preventing him from his precious sleep. Oh, how he yearned for a decent amount of sleep! If he ignored the animal again, he would probably end up in deeper problems.

'I cannot ignore this guy anymore! What do you want?!'

Kin softly growled and opened his eyes, ears flattened in clear annoyance. What he didn't expect to see was a crow. A bird; a flying mammal; a-!

''Oi! What're you doing?''

Kin said, voice a tad higher-pitched than usual. He paused, embarrassed by his voice, and sat up with another grunt. He looked at the bird with curiosity. The crow was average sized, complete with black eyes that glimmered in the dark. Why was the crow looking at him with such an amused look was another matter. Kin slightly narrowed his eyes as he looked at the bird, warily relaxing himself.

Ah, so the beast awakes! Shou tilted his head, and flapped his wings for a moment. After steadying himself on the ground - which he began to feel was much too low and covered with bones - this dog must have been so very tired, only a dog would choose to sleep in the cave covered with bones. The growl of the dog didn't startle Shou too much; this dog was much to tired to be much of a threat, which only made him that much more amusing to pester.

''Oi! What're you doing?''

"It's about time you've woke up." Shou stated, looking up at the dog as he sat up. Shou's head turned so that one eye could focus on the lumbering beast. His scars meant little to Shou; birds were not apt to earning scars in the way a dog was. One scar often meant certain death, unless one was incredibly lucky. This was why the ability to fly was so important; Shou had to be good at flying in order to avoid the dangers of terrestrial living. He also had to avoid the fangs of the creatures much bigger than he, which Shou was now observing when Kogane the Kishu spoke. Shou's eyes blinked a few times, as if measuring just how long those fangs were, and then he continued, "this is my cave, mister Kishu, and I would prefer it if you asked permission before wandering in." Shou raised his head, as if to show how proud he was, even though all of this was a lie. Crows owned nothing, they traveled freely and lived off of the land. "Unless you want to join the bones that sit around here?" Shou moved his head and picked up a small bone - which was, more than likely, from a small rodent. He held it in his beak and tossed it in Kogane's direction. He tilted his head and stared up at Kogane, as if to ask 'well?' - he eagerly awaited this dog's reaction. Either the dog would leave, or be stupid and stay. Perhaps this fellow was so dimwitted (more so than other dogs Shou knew) that he would truly believe that a bird owned a cave.

''It's about time you've woke up.''

The crow spoke in a voice that reminded Kin of an old leader he had met when he was a mere puppy, still learning basics of life from Khan, his mentor and role-model. That old dog spoke in the same manner as this crow and it slightly startled Kin, but he didn't show it on his face. Pushing those thoughts aside, he studied the bird. It seemed to be doing the same as well with him.

''This is my cave, mister Kishu. I would prefer it if you asked permission before wandering in. Unless you want to join the bones that sit around here?''

The crow had to be joking. How could a bird own a cave? Why would they even need one in the first place? Kin had another little memory pop up in his head about Khan telling him about a monster bird that ate naughty puppies. Besides that, was it even possible for a crow to devour large animals? There were some deer or hoofed animal bones among the bones on the ground.

Stifling a laugh as best as he could, Kin smiled at the crow. He could sense it's nervousness of the possibility of it becoming a little meal. Who wouldn't be that way if you were only a foot or so away from a carnivorous animal that could possibly tear your flesh without strain?

Attempting to be still respectful, despite being different species, Kin looked at the smaller face of whom he was speaking to and stated,

''I do not believe birds own caves...''

Again laughter threatened to come out of the young male dog's throat as he imagined a crow flapping its wings at the entrance of a cave and screeching like a bear would to ward off nearby animals. Kin finally let out an awkward cough when a small laugh escaped. Bird, cat, or dog, he was always respectful to whom he talked to. Much teasing was his fellow dog's response to this manner of communication, but Kin was not fazed by this.
